Key Takeaways:

What is PROLENSA Prescription Assistance Program?

The Prolensa Prescription Assistance Program is a manufacturer-sponsored initiative designed to help qualifying patients who cannot afford Prolensa access the medication at no or reduced cost. The program is available to U.S. citizens and legal residents who have experienced financial or insurance hardships. A bridge program is also available for patients experiencing a temporary delay, loss, or change in coverage.

Cataract surgery can restore clear vision and transform your quality of life — but the post-operative recovery period requires careful anti-inflammatory treatment. When your ophthalmologist prescribes Prolensa and you discover that a single small bottle costs $362+, the unexpected expense can be jarring — especially for Medicare patients on fixed incomes who represent the majority of cataract surgery patients.

AffordMyPrescriptions eliminates that burden. For a flat $69.95 per month, our Patient Advocates identify the most affordable pathway — whether that's the brand PAP, a copay card, or the dramatically cheaper generic.

Medicare Part D patients accepted. If you have Medicare Part D coverage, you may still qualify for the Patient Assistance Program through case-by-case exceptions.

Discount Coupons vs. Patient Assistance Programs

Many patients try discount cards first. Here's why the Patient Assistance Program through Afford My Prescriptions is the better long-term solution:

Limitations of Coupons

  • Prices fluctuate — savings aren’t guaranteed month-to-month
  • Copay accumulators may prevent savings from counting toward deductible
  • Cards expire and require constant renewal
  • Subject to strict monthly or annual maximum savings caps
  • Can’t be used with Medicare, Medicaid, or government insurance

Advantages of PAP Through Us

  • Fixed $69.95/month — never changes regardless of retail price
  • No expiration — continuous access as long as you qualify
  • Medication supplied directly from the manufacturer
  • We manage all paperwork, refills, and renewals
  • If denied, we explore alternative savings on your behalf

DO YOU QUALIFY?

Eligibility is generally determined by annual household income levels. Most programs follow guidelines that include a limit of up to $40,000 for individuals, $60,000 for couples, and $100,000 for larger families. Because these requirements can vary, we encourage you to contact Afford My Prescriptions
directly so we can review your specific situation and determine if you qualify for assistance.

Understanding Demser:

Prolensa (bromfenac ophthalmic solution 0.07%) is a prescription NSAID (nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug) eye drop used to treat inflammation and pain following cataract surgery in patients age 10 and older. You apply one drop to the affected eye once daily, beginning the day before surgery and continuing for 14 days after the procedure. Prolensa’s once-daily dosing offers convenience compared to older NSAID eye drops that require multiple daily applications. One 3 mL bottle typically
provides enough medication for the full treatment course.

How it works:
During cataract surgery, your ophthalmologist removes the clouded natural lens of your eye and replaces it with a clear artificial lens. Although modern cataract surgery is minimally invasive, any surgical procedure on the eye triggers an inflammatory response — your body’s natural healing reaction. While some inflammation is normal, excessive or prolonged inflammation can cause pain, redness, light sensitivity, and potentially serious complications like cystoid macular edema (swelling in the central retina). Prolensa works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX) in the tissues of your eye. COX is responsible for producing prostaglandins — chemical messengers that drive inflammation, pain, and swelling. By inhibiting COX and reducing prostaglandin production directly at the site of surgery, Prolensa decreases the inflammatory response in your eye, relieving pain and reducing the risk of post- surgical complications. Unlike corticosteroid eye drops (which broadly suppress the immune response), NSAID eye drops like Prolensa target the inflammatory pathway specifically without the risks associated with steroid use, such as increased eye pressure.

Form and use:
Apply one drop to the affected eye once daily, beginning the day before surgery and continuing for 14 days after the procedure. Wait at least 5 minutes between this and any other eye drops. One 3 mL bottle typically provides enough medication for the full 15-day treatment course for one eye.

Generic availability:
Generic bromfenac 0.07% ophthalmic solution is available in the United States, approved by the FDA in 2023. Generic bromfenac can be found at U.S. pharmacies for approximately $36 to $118 per 3 mL bottle with discount coupons — a substantial savings compared to brand-name Prolensa at $362–$480.
The generic contains the same active ingredient at the same concentration and is approved for the same indication. For most patients, generic bromfenac is the preferred option due to its dramatically lower cost and clinical equivalence.

Warnings:
Do not use while wearing contact lenses. Tell your ophthalmologist if you have a known allergy to NSAIDs or aspirin. May increase risk of bleeding in patients with bleeding tendencies. Slow or delayed healing is possible. Stop and contact your doctor if you experience increased eye redness, pain, or vision changes during use.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How Much Does Lupron Depot Cost Without Insurance?

Brand-name Prolensa costs approximately $362–$480 per 3 mL bottle. Generic bromfenac 0.07% is available for as little as $36–$80 with coupons. The manufacturer copay card offers $25 per bottle for insured patients and $70–$79 for uninsured patients. Through AffordMyPrescriptions, qualifying patients can access Prolensa at no medication cost — our $69.95 monthly fee covers advocacy.

For most patients, generic bromfenac 0.07% is clinically equivalent and dramatically more affordable at $36–$80 per bottle with coupons. Unless your ophthalmologist has a specific reason to prescribe the brand, the generic is typically the best option. Our advocates will help you find the most affordable pathway.

The standard treatment course is 15 days total: beginning one day before surgery and continuing for 14 days after. One 3 mL bottle is typically sufficient for the entire course for one eye. If you're having surgery on both eyes at different times, you may need a second bottle.

Many Medicare Part D plans cover Prolensa or generic bromfenac, but coverage varies by plan. Some plans may require prior authorization or may only cover the generic. The manufacturer also offers a specific program for Medicare Part D patients. Our advocates can help determine your best option.

Yes. Prolensa is commonly used alongside steroid eye drops and antibiotic eye drops as part of a comprehensive post-cataract surgery regimen. Your ophthalmologist will prescribe the specific combination and schedule. When using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between each drop to ensure proper absorption.

Our Patient Advocates immediately explore every alternative — including the manufacturer’s $25 copay card (commercially insured) or $70–$79 uninsured pricing, GoodRx and SingleCare coupons for generic bromfenac ($36–$80), generic ketorolac ophthalmic drops ($15–$50 as an alternative NSAID), insurance formulary exception requests, and other post-surgical eye care options your ophthalmologist may recommend.
