Discount Coupons vs. Patient Assistance Programs

Many patients try discount cards first. Here’s why the Patient Assistance Program through AffordMyPrescriptions is the better long-term solution for BeneFIX:

Limitations of Coupons

  • Prices fluctuate — savings aren’t guaranteed month-to-month
  • Copay accumulators may prevent savings from counting toward deductible
  • Coupon cards expire and require constant renewal
  • Still $20,000–$50,000+ per month per month even with the best discount

  • Can’t be used with Medicare, Medicaid, or government insurance

Advantages of PAP Through Us

  • Fixed $69.95/month — never changes regardless of retail price
  • No expiration — continuous access as long as you qualify
  • Medication supplied directly through the assistance program
  • We manage all paperwork, refills, and annual renewals
  • If denied, we explore alternative savings on your behalf

DO YOU QUALIFY?

Eligibility is generally determined by annual household income and insurance status. Most programs follow guidelines that include limits of up to $40,000 for individuals, $60,000 for couples, and $100,000 for larger families. Because requirements vary by program and household, we encourage you to contact AffordMyPrescriptions directly so we can review your specific situation and determine if you qualify for BeneFIX assistance.

Not sure if you qualify?  Our pre-qualification check is completely free. If we can’t help, you won’t be charged.

Understanding BeneFIX :

BeneFIX is recombinant factor IX for hemophilia B (factor IX deficiency). Hemophilia B is X-linked recessive bleeding disorder caused by F9 gene mutations — affects ~1:25,000 males. Without treatment, recurrent joint bleeds cause arthropathy; CNS bleeds can be fatal. Modern prophylaxis dramatically improves outcomes.

How BeneFIX Works:

Factor IX is essential clotting factor in intrinsic coagulation pathway — activates factor X to form thrombin. Deficiency causes prolonged bleeding.

BeneFIX is recombinant FIX produced in CHO cells — standard half-life (~18–24 hours), so requires twice-weekly IV infusion for prophylaxis. Extended half-life products (rFIXFc, rIX-FP, rFIX-PEGylated) allow weekly or less frequent dosing. Prophylaxis prevents joint bleeds and complications; episodic use for acute bleeds.

Form and use:

BeneFIX IV infusion. Prophylaxis: dose every 3–4 days (or twice weekly). Treatment: dose calculated by bleed severity and target factor level. Self-infused at home after training. Tracked via factor logs.

Generic availability:

No biosimilar. Other FIX products: Alprolix (rFIXFc — extended half-life, weekly), Rebinyn (rFIX-PEGylated), Idelvion (rIX-FP, weekly–every-2-weeks). Plasma-derived: AlphaNine SD, Mononine. Hemgenix (etranacogene dezaparvovec) and Beqvez (fidanacogene elaparvovec) — gene therapies as one-time treatments for severe hemophilia B (~$3.5 million but durable factor production).

Warnings:

Hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis (especially in patients with prior allergic reactions to factor IX); inhibitor development (anti-FIX antibodies — less common than factor VIII inhibitors but possible; reduces factor activity, may cause severe allergic reactions); thrombotic events (especially with bypassing agents); nephrotic syndrome (in patients with FIX inhibitors and history of allergic reactions).

BeneFIX (standard half-life): every 3–4 days IV infusion. Alprolix/Rebinyn/Idelvion (extended half-life): weekly or less frequent dosing. Trade-offs: convenience vs cost vs personal response. Many hemophilia B patients have switched to extended half-life products for convenience.

Hemgenix and Beqvez are FDA-approved one-time IV gene therapies for severe hemophilia B in eligible adults. AAV vector delivers F9 gene to liver — produces functional factor IX. Cost ~$3.5 million but potentially eliminates need for ongoing factor replacement. Available at specialized centers.

Anti-FIX antibodies less common than anti-FVIII (hemophilia A inhibitors) — affect ~3–5% of hemophilia B patients, often with severe allergic reactions to FIX. Inhibitor management complex; may require bypassing agents (FEIBA, NovoSeven), immune tolerance, or gene therapy.

Standard for hemophilia care. Patient/family trained for self-infusion. Infusion log critical for tracking dose, response, breakthrough bleeds. Hemophilia treatment centers coordinate.

Other FIX products with own PAPs. Hemophilia Federation of America, National Hemophilia Foundation, PAN Foundation. Gene therapy referral for severe disease.
